Supplemental Savings FAQs

What’s the difference between a regular savings account and the supplemental savings account?

The only difference is that a supplemental savings is an additional savings account. You can name each account based on your specific financial goals — saving up for a vacation, making a large purchase, etc. — allowing you to more easily track your progress toward that goal.

How do I open a supplemental savings account in Alliant Online Banking?

Supplemental Savings Accounts can be opened in just a few easy steps in Alliant Online Banking. These accounts, dedicated to a particular financial need (emergency fund, holiday gifts, weddings, vacations, etc.), are a great way to reach your savings goals.

  • Log in to Alliant Online Banking and select Open an Account.
  • On the Open New Account page, select Supplemental Savings.
  • Assign a Custom Name for the account, and complete the rest of the form indicating joint owners (if any) and how you’ll fund the account (or you can opt to open the account now and fund it later).

To optimize your savings, set up automated recurring transfers to your new account. Just select Transfer Money and indicate the account you want the money transferred from.

Please note that while there is no minimum balance required to keep your account open, you need to maintain an average daily balance of $100 to be eligible for dividends on your account.

Can I have more than one supplemental savings account?

Yes. You can have up to 19 supplemental savings accounts.

Are there any transaction restrictions for savings accounts?

The number of withdrawal transactions from savings accounts are limited by federal law.

Do I have to maintain a minimum balance to have a savings account or to earn interest?

The minimum balance to keep your savings account open is $5. To earn interest, you must maintain a daily average minimum balance of $100. Alliant interest is paid monthly.

Why can’t I get a debit card for my savings account?

Savings accounts are a convenient way for members to save money. Federal regulations restrict the number of electronic transactions on savings accounts to six per month, excluding personal withdrawals. For this reason, we provide members a limited-use Convenience Card, which permits members to withdraw cash from Alliant network ATMs. We encourage members to open a checking account for more flexible access to their money, while relying on a savings account for their money to remain and grow.

What is a preauthorized transaction?

A preauthorized transaction includes any arrangement with Alliant to pay a third party from your account upon verbal or written requests, including those received through the automated clearing house (ACH).

Does Alliant offer Cashier’s checks?

Alliant offers an "Official Credit Union Check" that function the same as a Cashier's Check. You can get an Official Credit Union Check by requesting one through Alliant Online Banking, by calling Alliant Phone Banking at 800-328-1935, or by visiting an Alliant Branch. Funds are deducted from your account at the time the Official Credit Union check is issued. There is no fee for the issuance of an Alliant Official Credit Union check unless you request that the check mailing be expedited, in which case you will be charged for express shipping.
