Microsoft announces Internet Explorer vulnerability – take precautions

Microsoft has issued a warning to consumers regarding potential security vulnerabilities associated with their Internet Explorer 6 and above (including 11). This security flaw may allow attackers to install malware on your computer without your permission. That malware could be used to steal personal data, track online behavior, or gain control of the computer. One way this can happen is when an attacker hosts a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit this vulnerability through Internet Explorer and then convince a user to view the website.

Here are some useful tips to help protect yourself while online:

  • Virus protection. Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses, worms, and other security threats.
  • Spyware and other malware protection. Antispyware software can help protect your computer from spyware and other potentially unwanted software.
  • Windows Update. Windows can routinely check for updates for your computer and install them automatically.
  • Safe Browsing.  Do not to visit un-trusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.
  • Alternative browser. Consider using an alternative Web browser such as Chrome or Firefox until an official update is available.
  • Internet Explorer Security Settings. Go to 'Tools / Internet Options’ and then click the Security tab and set Internet security to 'High'.
