Important Tips For Your PIN

October 25, 2011 | Alliant Credit Union

A PIN is an important security element of your credit and debit card because it identifies you as the card owner and is the key to authorizing transactions, thus it is important that you know your PIN and you never disclose it to anybody to keep it secure. Remember that Alliant will never solicit your for personal information, such as PIN and other account information. Contact us immediately if you think unauthorized access or fraud has occurred in connection with your Alliant Credit Union accounts.

Here are some tips to protect your PIN and reduce the chances of card fraud:

  • Treat your card like cash.
  • Keep it in a safe place and never leave it unattended.
  • Memorize your PIN and keep it confidential. Don't write it down.
  • Never reveal your PIN to anyone.
  • Consider changing your PIN from time to time. You can now update your PIN in Alliant Online Banking
  • Try to use your hand or body to shield the entry of your PIN.
  • Review your statements regularly for any unauthorized transactions.
  • If your card is stolen, lost or retained by an ATM, contact us immediately at 800-328-1935 (24/7).

When selecting your PIN it's important to choose your code carefully. You should select a number combination that is easy enough to remember without writing it down, but hard enough for someone else to guess it. Here are a few tips on creating a secure PIN that is easy to remember, but hard for others to guess:

  • Avoid using sequences, such as 1234, or numbers that others can guess, such as your birthday or home address. Create a unique combination of numbers to avoid the risk of someone deducing it after a few attempts. It is also important to use a PIN that you haven't used in the past.
  • Use different PINs for different accounts too. This will reduce the chance of having all of your accounts compromised if someone guesses the correct PIN.
  • Select a PIN with numbers that mean something to you, but would be challenging for someone to figure out.
