New Year’s Resolutions

December 19, 2011 | Alliant Credit Union

The start of a new year offers time to reflect, make new commitments and resolutions or get back on track what we wanted to complete last year. The list for the new year wouldn't be complete without a financial resolution, so here are examples of resolutions to add to your list for a wealthier year.

Build An Emergency Fund
Decide to build an emergency fund this year. Open a Supplemental Saving Account in Alliant Online Banking and aim to have at least three months worth of living expenses set aside in savings. Make it easier by setting up automatic transfers to coincide with each paycheck, so you won't miss the money. Change the name of the account to "Emergency Fund" as a reminder of why you're saving and if you know you're the type of person that might use it for non-emergency purposes, add "Don't Touch."

If you already have an emergency fund with three months of living expenses, increase it to six months this year for extra cushion.

Track Your Spend
If you don't track your spending, make this the year to do it. Sign up for the Alliant Online Banking Personal Financial Management tool for free to help monitor your spending, set budgets and goals, track income and bills, schedule alerts and import all of your financial information from Alliant and other financial institutions into one place. It's a vital tool to help you figure out where you can reduce spending.

Plan To Pay Down Debt
Develop a plan to pay down debt this year. Make a list of all of your debts and identify which you can pay off first. If it's credit card debt, aim to pay the minimum on all cards except for the one that you're focused on paying off. By removing the smaller debts first, you'll have the drive and confidence to pay down the larger debts in the future.

Reduce Your Bills
The beginning of a new year is a great time to review regular bills too. Look at your electric, cable, cellphone and all others bills, such as subscriptions, to see if you might be able to get a better price or if you may need to cancel it. Compare services in your area for better prices and promotions that better fit your budget and needs. If you don't want to change service providers, call your provider directly and see if there are opportunities for you to save. If you realize that you're not fully using a subscription, cancel it or see if there are alternative subscription options. If you read a magazine on your tablet more than you read the physical issue you receive in the mail, see if you can change your plan to just pay for a digital subscription. Every little bit helps you reduce spending to save and reach other financial goals sooner.

Go On A Diet
Instead of going on a diet to lose weight, go on a financial diet and aim to become a more deliberate consumer. Get rid of things you don't need and buy less by purchasing more for your needs and less for your wants. It's a great way to get your finances on track and build an emergency fund, track your spending easier and pay down debt.
