Traveling with your credit card II
March 28, 2013 | Alliant Credit Union
Last week, we gave you a few tips so your credit and debit cards are safe while you travel. Because this it is almost spring break season, we thought you would enjoy a few more:
- Know where you are traveling and what the rates are to use your card. The Alliant Visa products are available with a 1% international transaction fee. However, many other credit cards charge as much as 3-5% on each international transaction. Know before you go to avoid surprise when your statement arrives.
- Ask retailers if they accept Visa. Because the financial industry is different country to country, some retailers overseas may not accept Visa. If a retailer has a sticker that claims they accept Visa, you should have no problem making a transaction with yours.
- Keep phone and credit card numbers in a safe place. In case of a robbery, keep the credit card numbers and phone numbers for financial institutions in a safe place while you travel. This way, the cards can be cancelled as soon as possible with little legwork. Having the credit card numbers for cards you are requesting to cancel immediately will also help speed the process so thieves will have a smaller window to try to use your cards.
- Alliant is always available through mobile and online. If you are traveling internationally and need to reach out to us specifically, you can always do so through our Mobile Banking app (iOS and Android) or through Online Banking.
Avoid denied transactions while traveling by calling your financial institution first.
