Track your spending.

One easy way to start understanding your finances is to track your spending. Using a personal finance application, you can see where your money is going automatically from linking the application to your credit cards and accounts. If you prefer to write things out, or spend mainly in cash, keep a small journal with you and write down every time you spend money. At the end of a week look back and see how many times you splurged or spent excessively. Seeing where you spend will help you understand where you can cut back. Cutting spending allows increased savings!
