Overdraft Protection

Payment Protection

The Overdraft Protection program transfers money from your Alliant savings or supplemental savings account to cover your overdrafts, including checks you write, point-of-sale or signature-based VISA® Debit Card transactions. (ATM transactions are not covered.)

There is no cost to enroll in Overdraft Protection; however, if it is used the fee is $3.00 per day.

Overdraft Protection is a good option for members with back-up funds in their Alliant savings or supplemental savings account to help avoid potentially embarrassing situations and protect against incurring overdraft fees from merchants.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign-up for Overdraft Protection?
You can select and set-up Overdraft Protection when you apply for a checking account on the application, by calling our 24/7 Member Contact Center or visiting an Alliant service center.

Why does Alliant Credit Union offer Overdraft Protection?
Alliant offers Overdraft Protection as a service to members. We do not encourage overdrafts. We encourage our checking accountholders to manage their finances responsibly. However, we also understand mistakes happen. And, rather than automatically returning insufficient items, we want to help members avoid the additional merchant fees and possible damage to their credit history.

What is the cost for Overdraft Protection?
Overdraft Protection costs nothing if it is not used. If it is used, the fee is $3.00 per day.

Can I cancel Overdraft Protection if I change my mind later?
You can enroll or change your overdraft coverage options at any time through Alliant Online Banking, by calling our Member Contact Center at 800-328-1935 (24/7) or visiting an Alliant Service Center.

How will I know if I've used Overdraft Protection?
If you've used Overdraft Protection, you will see a transfer (debit) from your savings or supplemental savings account, a credit to your checking account for the overdraft plus a fee charged to your checking account. All your checking account transactions are available anywhere, anytime through Alliant online banking or on your Alliant account statement.

How can I avoid overdrafts?
There are many ways to avoid overdrafts by managing your account, including:

  • Keeping track of how much money you have in your account by recording checks when you write them or other debit/electronic transactions when you make them
  • Don't forget about automatic or recurring payments you may have set up
  • Sign-up for account alerts. You can send an alert to any device which has a valid e-mail address, to notify you if your account balance has changed, if there has been a withdrawal to your account or if you've made a debit card purchase
  • Keep an eye on your account balance via Alliant online banking; it's free and easy
  • Review your account statement monthly
