Save Every Day: Pack Your Lunch
August 15, 2012 | Alliant Credit Union
Looking for a great way to save some money every day? Pack your lunch! Don't stop with just packing lunch for yourself, it's cheaper and healthier to pack your child's lunch full of fruits and veggies than it would be to pay for a lunch plan at school.
Don't know where to start? It's easy, start with a base item, typically a protein (chicken, turkey, beef, salami) and build a sandwich. For extra crunch, add a leaf of lettuce. Bring some dairy to the lunch party by adding a piece of cheese to the sandwich.
Next, pack baby carrots or celery sticks as a side dish. Complete the lunch with a piece of fruit like an apple or an orange.
If no one in your household likes fruits or veggies, incorporate them in a unique way so the vitamins are still consumed.
Veggie chips, fruit cups and smoothies are a great way to get important nutrients without eating raw fruits or veggies.
You can make smoothies for yourself ahead of time and store them in the break-room fridge in canning jars. Pack a straw and your mid-morning snack or afternoon treat is ready to go when you are.
As an extra treat to yourself and your child, add a piece of candy or a cookie in lunch once or twice a week. You will save money and gain vitamins from packing your own great lunches!
