The Alliant Summer Intern, 2012
July 09, 2012 | Nikki Goncalves | Alliant Credit Union
I am originally from Angola in the South Central part of Africa, but currently I reside in Chicago. I attended Bradley University in Peoria Illinois, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, with a concentration in Public Relations.
I discovered my internship with Alliant Group through an organization that I belonged to called Foster Care to Success (FC2S). This organization's mission is to help foster youth to graduate by providing them with scholarships and grants.
Alliant is one of the organizations that donate money to FC2S. As someone who was once apart of the foster care system and received grants and scholarships from FC2S; I never imagined that this summer I would be intern with the organization that helped to provide me with scholarships and grants for my education.
My internship at Alliant Credit Union:
My internship with Alliant Credit Union lasted for eight weeks. I was able to get a great range of experience from the different departments in the Alliant organization. My first week, I was placed in the Human Resources Department. While working in Human Resources, I was able to learn about the different aspects of Human Resources.
Next, I moved to the Marketing and Communications Department. There I stayed for just over three weeks, since it related more to what I majored in at school. I was given an overview of what each person did in the department and got a chance to work one on one with each person in the department. Getting an opportunity to work with everyone made me feel part of the team. I was able to work on all the projects that they worked on, which I'm very grateful for. Everything from promotion letters for certain loans that Alliant offers, update PowerPoint presentations for the Business Development Team to use. I even designed certificates for employee recognition meetings.
I was also able to work on a flyer and a logo for a charity event that Alliant has every year; this year the event was with Multiple Sclerosis Society. Researching for both social media and the monthly newsletters that are sent out to the members was another one of my tasks. I helped produce posts for Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I was also afforded a wonderful opportunity to attend a meeting with the President and CEO of Alliant, the CFO and the VP of Marketing.
Overall, my internship with Alliant was an amazing learning experience. I enjoyed the opportunity to learn and work with great people, who provided me with invaluable knowledge about the Communication and Marketing industry. Everyone was very willing to answer any questions and it definitely helped to prepare me for the type of jobs that I will tackle in the future. Working with Alliant helped me to learn more about myself and helped to discover the kinds of organizations I would like to work with in the future. It was great to work for an organization that once helped me when I was in need and this experience has made even more excited for my future career in PR.
