When did debit cards come out?

The first debit cards were introduced in the early 1970s, but their function was to withdraw funds from a checking account at an ATM. They could not be used for retail purchases and only had one job: getting cash when needed, quickly from an ATM. Now debit cards can be used at many retailers in person and online.
