Frequently Asked Questions
Can I really open a savings account with just $5?
Yes. You can open an Alliant savings account and become a member for just $5. Everybody has to start somewhere, and we want to make it as easy as possible for new members to begin to save, even if it starts with just $5.
Is there a minimum balance?
The minimum balance to keep your savings account open is only $5.
Do I have to maintain a minimum to get dividends?
In order to qualify for dividends, you must maintain a daily average minimum balance of $100. Alliant dividends are paid monthly.
Are there any transaction restrictions?
No more than 6 preauthorized, automatic, electronic, or telephone transfers and withdrawals may be made to another account in any month. Additional transactions will not be completed and will be returned unpaid. If this is the case, you will be assessed an NSF fee. You can make unlimited transfers (no limit) at an ATM, in person at a Service Center, through the mail or to any Alliant Credit Union loan.
What is a preauthorized transaction?
A preauthorized transaction includes any arrangement with us to pay a third party from your account upon oral or written orders including orders received through the automated clearing house (ACH).

Amazing rate!By MJ - January 13, 2015
Phenomenal rate on a savings account with no minimum balance? I'm never banking with a bank again! When I tell people the rate I have they think I have a CD, I just say nope it's a savings account.
FlexibleJanuary 7, 2015
I've been an Alliant member for longer than I can remember. I've witnessed many changes and while they have kept pace with technology, they haven't changed their mission. I can transfer funds next day(when initiated from Alliant), withdraw/deposit from an ATM, deposit a check from my phone- try that with any other "online" bank. Their customer service is ALWAYS top notch. Don't let one (albeit major) faux pas shadow the consistent, reliable, easy-to-use service that is Alliant Credit Union.
downloadsJanuary 6, 2015
After downloading my account, all requested downloads "slow as "molasses"!
Very low interest rateJanuary 6, 2015
I remember when Alliant was a leader with interest rates. Now Alliant is just like any other institution with rates like everybody else. I'm getting my money out of the there. I can't wait to here the reasons. Let me guess, we need to make money for the shareholders or were limited by law. Now you send an e-mail telling me I can get tax forms. I wasted 20 minutes on this bad web site and I wasn't able to get any forms.
I'll Keep You:)By Sarah A. Riggs - January 6, 2015
I have been a member of Alliant since before it was Alliant (16 years) and have never had a problem that couldn't be solved quickly and easily (and those were few). My only wish is that transferring money from my account to bank were quicker. I believe many of those who aren't happy must be younger people used to all things happening in microminute time:)
Bad website.By Miro Spacil - January 6, 2015
Before I would go to Credit union and I would tell them " I would like to increase or decrease my saving" and that would be it. Now I look at this stupid website..... I dont know where to start. I just walk away. And not to forget , before I went on this website , I was in good mood.

Very Happy except ...January 6, 2015
I love the web site, very intuitive. ACH transfers are faster than any other bank. The checking account is great, never a problem (5 stars). The savings account rate is low compared to other internet banks (Incredible 1.07%, Quorum 1.05%, ELF 1%, Ally 0.99%, etc). I'm not looking for Alliant to be a rate leader but another 0.1% would at least put it back in the running where it used to be.
Transferring fundsBy Paul Seider - January 6, 2015
Was very happy with the ease of transferring funds from my account to another members account. Done with ease and didn't take long at all. Thanks !!!

We have a regular savings, checking, trust (2) and a certificate and have convinced several of our children to join. We have been members for at least 40 years. We appreciate the ability to call via (ma bell) when we have a question.
My only concern is the low interest rate on savings. Also, I know the need for new automation but we are senior citizens and can't keep up with the changes.
How about recognition for longevity including multi accounts with high balances.
Fee to have an accountBy Robert Prescott - January 2, 2015
I have been with the Credit Union long before they changed their name. We were told us for time and time again for years that it was a free account. Now we are charged $1.00 unless we use paperless account. In many places around the land, internet is not there, or very spotty, but we are forced to pay the fee. Yet my mail box is stuffed with United Credit Union mail, offers as they call them, yet we still must pay a fee to get a statement. Was told I have to pay for the ink to print it.
Interest ratesJanuary 2, 2015
While I still like Alliant- their interest rates are no longer so great (Ally is .99% UFB is even higher).
At one time this was a nice savings choice- Now not so much

Incompetance and communicationBy HFW - January 1, 2015
Getting an outside quick transfer account set up was difficult. My account was closed according to ACU. Asking to have a representative call was ignored.
Convenient Credit UnionBy José L Hernández - January 1, 2015
As a foreign user, I appreciate the access to my account through the local ATM's in my home Country. Service by Alliant is no nonsense and every time I needed a reply, I had it really soon and to the point. If only you paid a bit more interest, you would be approaching perfection!

What Happened?By Norman R. - December 31, 2014
What happened to the great financial institution that once was Alliant Credit Union?
The customer representatives on almost every level and across all products can only be described as rookies, and they keep inventing new ways to tax your account. Statement fees? Are you kidding me?
Time to move on.

Saving Is Easy!December 31, 2014
I love the fact that you can have multiple savings accounts! It makes it so easy to save for specific events or items. For example; college, insurance deductibles and co-pays, home improvements, etc. I can see at a glance how much we have saved for each.
